About Shiba Inus

Picture of Two Shiba Inus

Shiba Inus (Shibas) are a small to medium sized dog that attract a lot of attention. If you are out with a Shiba, you will find a lot of people interested in the breed asking what type of dog it is. Some people mistake them for Akitas, but Shibas are much smaller than Akitas. Some people even mistake them for foxes! Originally from Japan, they are still somewhat uncommon in the United States but they are growing in popularity.

Shibas are similar in size to Beagles. Their faces are pointed and their ears stand erect. The most common color for a Shiba Inu is reddish brown. Other less common colors include: red, red sesame, black and tan, or cream. They typically have white or cream shadings present on the legs, stomach, chest and part of the tail and face. Shiba have thick furry coats and despite their relatively small size, are heavy shedders. Another distinguishing characteristic of Shibas is their bushy curly tail, which curls up towards their backs and loops around.

Shibas are very active dogs and they love to run and play. They usually love to be with other dogs but can be wary of strangers and actually make a good guard dog. But once they know you, a Shiba will warm up to you quickly. Shibas would be best suited for life with an owner who has a fenced yard but they are adaptable. At a minimum, a Shiba needs a daily walk.
